Our Deacons

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.
Honor one another above yourselves.
Never be lacking in zeal, but keep you spiritual fervor, service the Lord.
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer.
Share with God’s people who are in need.
Practice hospitality.
-Romans 12:10-13

The Work of a Deacon

What is a deacon.png
NEW FAMILY MEMBERS
When families grow with births, adoptions, and in-home care of family members, the Deacons will welcome and help create a sense of belonging and caring.
COMMUNION
For those not able to attend church and take part in communion, our Deacons are available upon request to serve communion in the home, hospital, or rehabilitation facility.  The Deacons are responsible for purchasing the bread and setting up the communion table each month.
HOSPITAL VISITATION
Deacons visit our EWPC family whenever possible during their stay in the hospital or a rehabilitation facility.
MEALS
Whenever someone in our church family needs assistance because of illness, hospitalization, or other life-altering events, the Deacons prepare and deliver meals to the individual or family.  The congregation is invited to provide meals during more extended periods of need.
MEMORIAL SERVICE RECEPTIONS
The Deacons, along with members of the Hospitality Committee, work together to ensure the family has the necessary support before and following a memorial service.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY
Shawls are made by both knitters and crocheters in our church congregation and given out to folks who need ā€œcomfortingā€ as a symbol of unconditional love from our Heavenly Father.  Our prayer is that the prayer shawls given out will wrap, enfold, comfort, and give solace to the recipients.

TRANSPORTATION
When possible, Deacons facilitate transportation arrangements for the EWPC church family who are unable to drive or find alternative transportation to regular or special EWPC events, medical appointments, etc.

More About the Role of a Deacon

Traditionally, deacons are people of compassion. His or her heart goes out to those in distress:
  • to members who have suffered loss
  • to neighbors in the hospital
  • to friends who have lost their jobs
  • to new parents who are confronted with the wonderful and challenging changes to life
  • to new members who need a word of welcome
  • to members who are shut-in and lonely
  • to people in the community who have lost their way and can no longer find God
  • to the economically oppressed and do not have adequate places to live or enough to eat
  • to anyone who needs to experience the love of Christ in concrete ways
